Writing Award June 2002

Pat Carroll has won the Will Solimene Award of Excellence from the New England Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association for the supplement she wrote for Home Healthcare Nurse "Treating Deep Venous Thrombosis at Home With Low Molecular Weight Heparin," published in January, 2000.

The award was presented at an awards banquet in Waltham, MA on June 13, 2002. In selecting this work for recognition, the judges said, "Well written. Very organized and informative. Explains the medical, pharmacological and economic aspects [of the treatment] clearly." "Very effective in explaining deep venous thrombosis and why low molecular weight heparin is both successful and cost effective [as a treatment]."

This is Ms. Carroll's 4th Award of Excellence from this prestigious organization, and her second for an article written for Home Healthcare Nurse. She was last honored for writing "Preventing the Risk of Needlestick Injury Associated with Implanted Ports," originally published in April, 1998.

Ms. Carroll said, "This supplement would not have been possible without the hard work of editor Carolyn Humphrey. It was a collaborative effort from start to finish. We should also thank Aventis Pharmaceuticals (at that time, Rhone Poulenc Rorer) for their support in providing the supplement to Home Healthcare Nurse's readers.

Ms. Carroll has recently been named to the editorial board of Home Healthcare Nurse as a clinical consultant.

Editorial Board: Home Healthcare Nurse

Pat Carroll is proud to announce her appointment to the editorial board of the Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins journal, Home Healthcare Nurse, the Journal for the Home Care and Hospice Professional. It is the official journal of the Home Healthcare Nurses Association.

Pat has experience in high-tech home care -- caring for patients at home on ventilators and those receiving home infusion therapy. She is in the process of exploring establishing a free healthcare clinic at the homeless shelter in her community.

In announcing the appointment, editor Carolyn Humphrey, RN, MS, FAAN wrote, "I am very excited about the contributions you have made to the journal as an article and supplement author as well as being an outstanding peer reviewer. Stepping up to the editorial board brings a wealth of exciting opportunities for our readers..."

In 2000, Pat received the Will Solimene Award for Excellence in Medical Communication from the New England Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association for her article "Reducing the Risk of Needlestick Injury Associated with Implanted Ports"

Pat has two manuscripts awaiting publication in 2002: one on recognizing heat-related illness and another on mobile chest drainage for home care patients. For a list of her contributions to the journal, click here.

Honor Society Induction!

Pat Carroll has been inducted into the nursing honor society of Excelsior College (formerly Regents College) of Albany, NY, from which she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Of approximately 27,000 nursing graduates since 1979, 61 were selected for this honor in 2001, the inaugural year.

Establishing a college nursing honor society is the first step toward having an Excelsior College Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing.

In support of Pat's nomination, Carolyn Humphrey, RN, MS, FAAN, editor of Home Healthcare Nurse wrote, "I never cease to be impressed by her many talents and commitment to nursing, patients, and families." Leslie Nicoll, RN, PhD, MBA, editor of Computers in Nursing and owner of the consulting firm MaineDesk in Portland, ME wrote, "[Pat] is an enthusiastic, mature, intelligent nurse...and will be an asset to your honor society."

Pat is honored and humbled to be a member of the inaugural induction class.

New Consumer Web Site!

Pat Carroll is pleased to announce the debut of a consumer health information web site: www.nursesnotebook.com. This web site coincides with her first media tour in which she is appearing on news programs in 10 of the top 20 television markets in the US to teach people about “Medicine Chest Must Haves.”  Since television only allows her a few minutes to teach viewers, the web site allows her to provide additional, more detailed consumer information. In addition, she has included a link called “Become a Health Professional.” She says, “If my visibility interests people in the health professions, I want to be able to capitalize on that interest and give people information about educational programs.”

Mentor Appointment!
Patricia Carroll has been appointed as a Mentor for the 2001 AACN Wyeth-Ayerst Nursing Fellows Program.  The program began in 1992 and is sponsored by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories in conjunction with the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the American Journal of Nursing.  As an experienced nurse leader and author, Pat was selected to be a mentor to Tracy Evans, RN, APRN, CCRN, CEN, MPH, MS, Trauma Coordinator at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT.  Pat will work with Tracy to further her clinical leadership skills with a focus on writing for the professional literature.  They will collaborate on an article for a supplement to the May, 2001 issue of the American Journal of Nursing, "Identifying impending respiratory failure: the nurse's role in rapid sequence intubation in the intensive care unit."

New Awards!
The New England Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association has awarded Patricia Carroll its prestigious Will Solimene Award for Excellence in Medical Communication this year -- twice -- one for her book, The Surgical Nurse's Managed Care Manual and second for her article, Reducing the Risk of Needlestick Injury Associated with Implanted Ports, that was published in Home Healthcare Nurse.  The awards were bestowed at a banquet outside Boston on June 15.

At the awards ceremony, the Managed Care Manual was praised for "its user-friendly approach to a complex subject.  The content was thorough, yet written in a way to educate -- not overwhelm -- the reader."  This book has also won the American Journal of Nursing's Book of the Year Award.

Pat's article on preventing needlestick injuries particularly impressed a physician judge who noted, "I thought I had learned everything about needlestick injuries, but this article was compelling.  Exceptionally well written with outstanding illustrations, this article was not only instructive, but should motivate the healthcare system to protect nurses." Carolyn Humphrey, the editor of Home Healthcare Nurse said, "This is the first writing award our journal has won.  Pat Carroll's work is consistently first-rate, and we are proud to have her as an author."  To commemorate the award, Home Healthcare Nurse reprinted an updated version of the article in February 2001.
